And of course you want rings that you will be super happy with and will stay that way.

Type
Who are you and what suits you and your partner? Do you choose simplicity, a classic look, a ring with a gemstone or not?
What suits your hands and you as a person and in your daily life?
If you have strong hands, a strong ring will also suit them.
If your hands are fine with long fingers, fine and wide rings are beautiful.
Look at what you are wearing, in terms of clothing and jewelry.

Material
Which material do you choose? Classic gold such as 14 and 18 kt?
Or is silver/argentium935 possibly in combination with gold also an option?
That can be a nice alternative with a smaller budget.
Argentium935 is silver alloyed with germanium. It is purer, whiter, stronger and more scratch-resistant than regular sterling silver.
In addition, it is hypoallergenic and 100% recycled. The price is slightly higher than sterling silver.
Gold is traditionally the most chosen material. It is strong and lasts a lifetime (or more).
14k gold (585) contains less pure gold than 18kt (750). The number 585 or 750 represents the amount of pure gold per 1000 that the alloy contains. The rest consists of silver and copper, depending on the color.

Color
Which color suits you and you? Are you a warm-colored type or not?
Which color suits you depends on your skin tone.
Do you have a warm (yellowish) or cool (red) skin undertone?
Yellow gold looks beautiful on warm skin types. White, pink or red gold is beautiful on cool skin tones.
Some skin types may wear all gold colors. Whether this influences your choice is of course up to you.

Style and width
Do you choose narrow or wide rings or something in between? Do you want rings as a set or more tailored to you as a person?
As mentioned before. Strong hands and types also suit strong rings. Thin rings suit slender types.
Long thin fingers can wear thin but also very wide rings very well.
If you have short fingers, choose narrow to medium wide rings.
Nowadays you can use handy apps to determine a ring size with an existing ring, e.g. from Jason Withers.
Tastes change over the years. That is why wedding rings often have a more neutral appearance than, for example, engagement rings.
An engagement ring can give direction to the style of the later wedding rings. Also ask yourself whether you want to wear your engagement and wedding rings as stackable rings.
Remember that wedding rings should be comfortable to wear. Sharp edges can feel unpleasant and prong or chaton settings often get caught in your clothing, causing the stones to come loose. Rounded corners and/or stones set in a smooth setting are a good option.

Budget, own gold and recycling​
Ultimately, the budget is also important. How much you want and can spend on your rings can be decisive for the choice of rings.
It is difficult to give a guideline for this because the price of wedding and engagement rings depends so much on the type of ring, how much gold is in the ring(s), the gold price, whether or not there are gemstones or diamonds and how much time it takes to make the ring(s).
If the budget is smaller, a silver/argentium935/gold combination can be an option. For inspiration, look at my Juwelig back to basic rings collection.

Bringing in your own gold isn't always much more advantageous. Processing old gold into usable new material is labor-intensive. The advantage depends heavily on the gold price.
If you choose your own gold for emotional value, that can of course be decisive. Sometimes an 'old' gold base ring is such that it can be transformed into a new ring relatively easily.

​The gold that I purchase for making new work comes from recycling for over 99% and is therefore very sustainable. In the Netherlands, purchasing from new mining (fair trade) is not necessary and therefore not fairer because in the Netherlands the demand for gold can be met entirely from recycling.The gold is recycled in EU countries such as Germany and Italy; in terms of sustainability and CO2 footprint a good choice and cheaper than fair trade gold from, for example, Central America.
